Matt O’Brien is President and Managing Director of CC&L Infrastructure, where he oversees the origination and execution of new transactions and is responsible for the overall leadership of the infrastructure business. Matt represents the firm on the board of a number of infrastructure projects and portfolio companies. He is also a member of the firm’s Responsible Investment Steering Committee, where he helps lead the development, implementation and communication of CC&L Infrastructure’s responsible investment approach.  

Matt has nearly 30 years of experience in the financial industry. In 2005, he joined Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group Ltd. (CC&L Financial Group) to establish and lead the company’s infrastructure and private equity businesses, now known as CC&L Infrastructure and Banyan Capital Partners. Prior to joining CC&L Financial Group, Matt was a Managing Director in the M&A group with RBC Capital Markets where he advised on a wide range of both US and Canadian public and private transactions. These transactions were cumulatively valued at over $20 billion and were primarily in the energy (E&P, oil services) and energy infrastructure (power generation, electricity transmission, natural gas processing, storage and transmission) industries. 

At CC&L Infrastructure, Matt has successfully established an integrated infrastructure investment and asset management team that oversees over 3,300 operating employees across a broad range of assets, raised billions of dollars of capital across multiple funds, and built a global portfolio of investments valued at over $7 billion. Matt also holds a senior leadership position at Banyan Capital Partners, where he sits on the firm’s Investment and Management Committees and is a member of CC&L Financial Group’s Board of Directors.

Matt earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics (with distinction) from McGill University and a Master of Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.
